Parents and guardians have again been advised to cultivate healthy relationships with the younger generation for them not to seek counsel from wrong sources.
The Director-General, Christ Against Drug Abuse Ministry, CADAM, Dr Dokun Adedeji, stated this at a forum in Lagos.
Dr Dokun, who said that many children, unknown to their parents, were already engaged in drug abuse, noted that in most cases, the young ones, due to neglect or negligence by the parents, have turned to alcohol and other substances for succour.
According to Dr Adedeji, “I tell schools, even churches, that they should inspect people selling biscuits and sweets around the vicinity; many of these traders sell these substances.”
” Research has found out that cannabis is the most common of them. Out of 14 million drug abusers,10million are into cannabis. Some parents don’t know the security they employ. Some of these gatemen even help collect parcels of hard drugs for the children. The children, of course, give the gateman bribes.”
The counsellor highlighted symptoms of addictions as an inclination to retreat from other family members, sleeping more, and using strong-scented perfumes.
“Warn your girl children that no man should open a drink for her. These boys put the drugs in their long fingernails, so she wouldn’t know when it will be whisked in the drink. Some even put drugs in air conditioners, which could make the victims hypnotised.”
“Don’t just put them in boarding schools and abandon them. Pay them unannounced visits, have access to their rooms,” Dr Adedeji added.
Dr Adedeji appealed to parents to be cordial with the children to raise their self-esteem, which could affect their development.
