IJESHATEDO SHOOTING: National Youth Council of Nigeria demands justice

The National Youth Council of Nigeria, Itire-Ikate branch has demanded justice for the late Monsurat Ojuade who was allegedly killed by a trigger-happy police officer.

The Coordinator of the branch, Comrade Ayo Oshodi in a chat with Radio Nigeria during a solidarity rally for the deceased said that the Council was worried that the case could be swept under the carpet.

The Council accused the Police of a cover up in the investigation and trial of the officer that fired the short that killed Monsurat.

“The killer Police Sgt. Samuel Phillips who allegedly shot dead Miss Monsurat Ojuade at Mogaji Street, Ijeshatedo, Surulere Lagos, was said to have been dismissed from the Nigeria Police Force, after the conclusion of his orderly room trial, but we’re not sure that was done yet because it was not made public.
We must ensure that she and her family get the justice that they deserve and desire.”

Comrade Oshodi added that despite the outrage that accompanied the *#EndSars* protests in October 2020, extra-judicial killing by policemen seem to have continued unabated.

Meanwhile, Counsel to the deceased family Mr. Israel Mbaebie who also said that the command should make its findings public, had noted that the stray bullet narrative by the Police did not reflect the truth of the incident

“We had earlier written a letter to the Lagos State Police Commissioner dated 20th September, 2021, wherein our clients demanded that the true identity of the said sergeant Samuel Phillips be made public, and that the stray bullet narrative be changed to reflect the true position of things which is to the effect that the bullet that killed Monsurat Ojuade was not a stray bullet but a case of premeditated murder on the part of the killer police.”

The victim was said to be in front of her parent’s house on Mogaji Street, Ijeshatedo, Surulere, Lagos when some anti-robbery officers from the State Criminal Investigation Department stormed the community and shot at her.
