Five Nigerians attempt To Break Guinness World Record In A Relay Reading.

The title holder of the Guinness World Longest Reading Marathon, Bayode Treasures- Olawunmi, a Nigerian, is at it again.

This time, Olawunmi who broke the Guinness World Record in the Reading Aloud Category in 2018 by reading for over 120 hours spanning five days, is attempting to beat the record in a relay reading by a team.

Olawunmi who hails from Ogun State in South-West Nigeria, has been joined by
four other Nigerians, all female: Maryam Abba Sadu – Borno State, Zainab Wakil Mohammed – Borno State, Doubra Yeri – Bayelsa State, Preciouslight Ukachi – Imo State in the attempt to read for 480 hours in the Longest Marathon record in a relay reading by a team category.

The current record of 365 hours and 39 seconds was set in Dominican Republic in July, 2001, twenty years ago.

The World record breaking attempt which started on December 1, at the Herbert Macaulay Library (You Read) at 338 Herbert Macaulay Way, Yaba, Lagos State, will run for 21 days at a go.

Captioned “Read2Build” the current attempt is also aimed to improve the reading culture and raise funds to build functional public libraries across Nigeria, especially in the rural areas.

Read2Build which is been championed by Olawunmi’s non-profit organization, iRead Afrika Foundation in partnership with the Lagos State Government, plans to raise five hundred million naira (N500,000,000) for the first phase of the project which is targeted at building 20 functional libraries, starting in the areas where there are most needed.

In each of the libraries, there would be a Legacy Wall where the names of those who donated to the cause and volunteered for the event will be written for posterity.
