FAAN Pushes for Rapid Implementation of Air Cargo Growth Strategy

The Managing Director, Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, seeks the need for speedy implementation of the Air Cargo Roadmap project.

The project aims to grow Nigeria’s air cargo industry from its current 5th position in Africa to number one on the continent.

Mrs. Kuku made this known during a meeting with the enlarged membership of the Aviacargo Roadmap committee, which was set up in December 2022.

The committee has been working to develop a roadmap for the growth of air cargo in Nigeria, and has faced disruptions due to changes in leadership at FAAN.

Despite these challenges, the committee has made progress, and FAAN has implemented some of the suggestions made by the committee.

To this end, the Authority has created a new Directorate of Cargo Development and Services, and has launched a pilot project to test the effectiveness of the air cargo pathway developed by the committee.

The pilot project involves trial runs of exports through four selected airports, including Lagos, Kano, Enugu, and Jos.

According to the MD FAAN, the trial runs will test the efficiency of the air cargo pathway and involve stakeholders from the air cargo ecosystem, including government agencies and private sector companies.

Mrs. Kuku commended the members of the Roadmap Committee for their passion and perseverance, and encouraged them to fasten the speed of the project.

She also emphasized the importance of air cargo to the government, stating that it is a critical sector that requires urgent attention.

The meeting was attended by FAAN directors, members of the Roadmap Committee, and representatives of government agencies and private sector companies.

A sub-committee was set up to strategize and fast-track the implementation of the trial runs, with a deadline of two weeks to submit its report.
