Family Planning records high patronage at Akerele PHC…as women testify to benefits

“When I started using the family planning method, I experienced some mild discomfort, so I switched to an injectable method, and I realised it’s just ok for me.”.

Mrs Grace Aniefiok, a mother of three, testified to the benefits of family planning, stating that she had been using the method since 2023 without any issues.

Another user, Mrs Comfort Aghata, who has four children, said that she started using FP three years ago and that it had helped her manage her family finances better.

According to her, the current situation in Nigeria made her embrace FP and advised other women to embrace any of the family planning methods suitable for them, adding that “it is a lifesaver in managing one’s family “.

Also, Mrs. Emem Idada, a mother of two, corroborated Aniofiok and Aghata’s views, saying that “FP is the only thing that has helped me to stabilise my family.”.

Idada said that most men would always want to have sex with their partners without recourse to the likely resultant pregnancies. In contrast, women would always be conscious of that and the implications of any “unplanned” addition to the family.

These different views between the man and the woman always caused problems, and the only way to strike a balance was to take on an FP method,” Idada said.

Those were the confessions of clients who expressed satisfaction in having signed on to one family planning method or the other during a field trip evaluation of FP services in Lagos State.

The event was part of a workshop on family planning for media practitioners. It highlighted myths, misconceptions, cultural beliefs, and religious challenges.

The Officer in Charge of Family Planning (FP) Services at Akerele Primary Health Centre, Mrs. Ajoke Daramola, reported an increase in the number of participants in the FP program.

According to her, those who access the services are married, young adults who are not married but sexually active.

She mentioned that the facility was open to everyone seeking family planning services, emphasizing that the services were available to all.

“The Programme Director of DEVCOMS, Mr Akin Jimoh, highlighted the numerous benefits of embracing Family Planning (FP). He emphasized that, in the current situation in the country, the quality of life for a family of four cannot be compared with a family of nine.”

He mentioned that FP encompasses various methods that are tailored to individual clients based on their body composition.

Stakeholders advised that any challenge associated with any FP method should be reported to an FP provider or a doctor for evaluation and management.

It is on record that SDG 3.7 supports universal access to sexual and reproductive health care services, including family planning, ensuring access for all people to their preferred contraceptive methods.

Investing in FP is key to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Also, SDG 5.6 targets ensuring universal access to sexual and reproductive health and reproductive rights.

Radio Nigeria reported that the training aimed to raise awareness among journalists about the TCI FP Intensification Phase plan and enhance media coverage of FP.
