Lagos Empowers 1,500 Women and Youths

One thousand, five hundred vulnerable women and youths in Lagos have benefitted various empowerment skills and equipment in a bid to reduce poverty and make them self-reliant as well as become employers of labour.

With this development, the empowerment Programme under the Micro Enterprise Support Initiative, MESI, organised by the Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, WAPA has empowered ten thousand people in the last five years of the Sanwo-olu administration.

At the empowerment Programme in Ikeja, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, said the initiative was designed to uplift vulnerable women and indigent youths by providing them with the tools and support they need to start and grow their own businesses, aimed to stimulate economic growth, reduce poverty, and create a more inclusive Lagos.

While imploring women to prevent their children from joining any protest, Governor Sanwo-Olu urged beneficiaries to make judicious use of the equipment and not to sell them, with a call on them to take advantage of the Lagos Employment Trust Fund to seek financial assistance.

Some of the beneficiaries who were visibly elated appreciated the gesture and prayed for continuity to empower more vulnerable people in the society.

Earlier, the WAPA Commissioner, Mrs Cecilia Dada, noted that the beneficiaries were graduates of the various skill acquisition centers across all Council Areas in the state, with a promise to sustain the tempo in line with the THEMES plus agenda of the Sanwo-Olu’s administration, through deliberate provisioning of economic empowerment assets.

Beneficiaries received basic empowerment tools/equipment which included tilling machine, shawarma grillers and toasters, fabricating machines, sewing, machine, barbing kit with sterilising kit and generators, hair dressing equipments, traditional cooking utensils and Gas Cooker with cylinder among others.
