LASU Charged to Create School of Computer Science

Going by the realities posed by technological advancement in the global community, Nigerian Universities, Lagos State University, LASU, in Particular, have been advised to upgrade Computer Science departments in their institutions to a full fledged School of Computer Science.

This is to give the institutions the opportunity to expose their students to various computer science based knowledge capable of empowering them to come up with innovations good enough to meet human technological needs.

The Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat gave the advise at the 27th Convocation lecture of the Lagos State University, LASU, held at the school’s main campus in Ojo.

He explained that since the world is being driven by technology, Nigerian Universities needed to move with the trend by exposing their students to up- to-date knowledge in science technology and provide them with adequate opportunity that would enable them to carry out research in areas of human technological needs.

Dr. Hazmat said that with the advent of Artificial Intelligence technology, Nigerian youths could not afford to lag behind in acquiring relevant knowledge in science technology so as be inventors of technological innovations capable of solving human problems.

He advised the Nigerian Youths to seek for knowledge that would enable them to provide goods and services needed by the people, so as to create good means of making money rather than look for dubious means of getting rich quick.

A former Governor of Lagos State, Dr. Babatunde Fashola, who delivered the 27th Convocation Lecture of the Lagos State University, said that despite the need for the graduating students to embrace technology in order to have a good standing in the.scheme of things in today’s world, they should ensure that they preserved humanity and human civilization.

He explained that allowing technology to erode human interaction and socialisation would not be in the interest of humanity.

Dr. Fashola however, advised the graduating students to be self discipline and demonstrate good character wherever they found themselves, as self discipline and good character go a long way at making an individual successful in life.

In an opening address, the Vice-Chancellor, Lagos State University, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello mentioned various ways by which the university had employed Information and Communication Technology to improve on its academic activities and interaction with the school community.

She however, thanked the Lagos State Government for supporting the University particularly, in the area of infrastructural development.

The Vice Chancellor and other top management staff of the university later presented the Convocation lecturer, Dr. Raji Fashola with a plaque of appreciation.
