Seven new boats have been added to the fleet of the Lagos State Ferry Services, LAGFERRY, bringing the total numbers of boats in the fleet to twenty.

A cashless mode of payment with the Lagos State travel card, Cowry card, for ferry services was also unveiled during the event.

The new boats will be deployed to the new routes of Epe, Badagry, Agbowa-Ikosi, UNILAG Community and Agbara-Ijanikin.

At the inauguration, Governor Babajide Sanwo-olu who was represented by the Deputy Governor, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, said the development was not aimed at edging out private participants in the sector, but rather to give Lagosians choices in the mode of transportation

In his remarks, the Commissioner for transportation, Dr Frederic Oladeinde who reiterated the no sailing at night and during foggy weather policy of the State Government, noted that with the use of the Cowry card, which is currently being used for buses, a seamless transportation system would be achieved, particularly when the rail transport becomes operational next year.

To demonstrate the features of the new boats and connectivity with road transportation, some of the guests were ferried from the Five Cowries terminal to the Boat Club on Awolowo road in Ikoyi, where they boarded the small shuttle buses, known as last mile buses, recently inaugurated by the State Government.
