NGO ADVOCATES BABY FRIENDLY POLICIES IN WORKPLACES.

As the World Breastfeeding Week enters the fifth day, a non Governmental Organization, Alive and Thrive, has called for the adoption of the National Baby Friendly Initiative on Workplace to Promote and Support Breastfeeding as a cost effective investment in current and future workplace.

The Project Manager of the NGO Dr. Victor Ogbodo made the call at a seminar in Lagos tagged: Dissemination of Toolkit on WORKPLACE BREASTFEEDING SUPPORT PROGRAMME.

According to Dr. Ogbodo, Breastfeeding saves lives, prevent illness and improves health and wellbeing of mothers and babies hence, the need to for stakeholders to provide an environment for working Mothers to give their babies the best start in life.

Also speaking, The Representative of The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Dr. Victor Ajieroh affirmed that, six months exclusive breastfeeding, boosts brain development and capacity, noting that infants who are optimally breastfed tend to have higher intelligent quotient scores than their non breastfed peers .

He called on governments and private organizations to approve six months of pay maternity leave for mothers and two weeks paternity leave for fathers to support exclusive breastfeeding.

On her part, the President, Network of Entrepreneurial Woman, at the Nigerian Employers Consultative Association, NECA, Mrs. Funmi Arowoogun who advocated the establishment of crèches and lactation centers at workplaces, said, it would be a win-win development for both the mothers and the organizations in terms of efficiency.
