Bright Sights gives vision to under-privileged children in Lagos

Two hundred and twenty pupils of a public school, Bethesda Nursery and Primary School in Ikota community of Eti Osa Council Area of Lagos have benefited from free vision screening to improve their education.

The gesture is courtesy of a Non-Governmental Organization tagged Bright Sights project.

At the free eye screening on the school premises, the NGO initiator, Miss Muna Ubosi who was represented by her mother, Mrs Ijeoma Ubosi and sister Adaora, said the gesture was to assist the less privileged in the school to access qualitative medical eye services.

Mrs Ubosi, who noted that she and her daughter Muna also suffered from eye defects from age nine, described vision impairment as a complex medical condition which affects the overall well-being of patients.

Appreciating the NGO for the gesture, the school’s Headmistress, Mrs Tonia Onyeabor, said most pupils in the school were from poor homes who could not afford medical bills to cater for their vision, and urged other NGOs to emulate the Bright Sight project.

In a health talk, an optometrist, Dr Ogechi Nwachukwu said reading under poor lighting and improper diet affected the eyes and will in turn affect the ability of the children to study and succeed in life.

Dr Nwachukwu urged parents to pay attention to their children’s sights as eye defects may not present symptoms like other ailments.

She advised everyone to go for eye check at least once a year and children should do so twice a year for early detention of defects and correction.

The beneficiaries who were given free glasses, eye drops and other medications thanked the Ubosi family for the initiative which they noted would improve their learning abilities.
