FAAN deploys new technology for passenger facilitation at airports

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, recently acquired new technology in an effort to ensure seamless facilitation of International passengers across the four major international airports in the country.

This new technology which had since arrived the country are currently being installed and some foreign airlines have been integrated into the system.

The new technology called Common Use Passenger Processing System (CUPPS) is an improvement on the previous one called the Common Use Terminal Equipment (CUTE).

The CUPPS is an IT solution that enables multiple airlines, service companies, or other users to use a uniform electronic interface for sharing physical check-in.

According to the Managing Director, Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria FAAN, Captain Rabiu Yadudu, the new technology and other facilities would be deployed in the five international airports, in addition to self service Kiosk, departure control and baggage reconciliation systems and Flight Information Display System.

He stated that, the items spelt out in the contract have improved package and soft ware with a much wider coverage for all Nigerians.

“The previous system we had is CUTE, the Common User Terminal Equipment but we now went for the upgrade, new technology of the CUPPS: Common User Passengers Processing system, this was the new technology since 2009 and now 11 years later FAAN and Nigeria are using the CUPPS system and for five airports”.

The old passenger facilitation system collapsed some few months ago when the contractor unceremoniously pulled out, airlines had to resort to handwritten boarding passes and bag tags for passengers leading to series of delays in facilitation.

Many foreign airlines had to rely on their own system to relieve passengers of the stress of waiting long hours in the queues as a result of the disruptions.

Manager South West Airports and Airport Manager, Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos, Mrs. Victoria Shinaba said, the bad experience of the last few months by passengers would soon be a thing of the past as currently some foreign airlines have  already been integrated into the system.

“We are able to bring on board KLM, Air France and by the grace of God all the other airlines will join and we will go back to how we where improved and better quality service”.

Director General, Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA, Captain Musa Nuhu after an inspection of the new technology being installed said, the efforts by FAAN was commendable.

“There’s been progress, is there more to do certainly, there is a lot more work to do”.

During the unveiling of the FAAN service charter in Lagos, the National Coordinator, SERVICOM in the Presidency, Mrs. Nnenna Akajemeli emphasized that FAAN must work at avoiding service failure.

“Airport business management is an international thing, there are standards that must be kept so, in doing this it is a further step to helping them achieve ICAO standards”.

General Manager, Customer Service FAAN, Dr. Ebele Okoye says, the self service kiosk would cut down on the number of queues.

“The self service kiosks would be delivered and help reduce the number of queue and the time limit”.

Within the next few days, all foreign airlines are expected to be integrated into the check-in system for seamless facilitation of passengers.
