Golden Legacy: Old Girls Association Unveils Iconic Projects as FGGC Oyo Turns 50!

The Old Girls’ Association of the Federal Government Girls’ College Oyo has outlined activities to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the unity school.

The theme of the fiftieth anniversary celebration is “Celebrating a Legacy of Excellence.”

At a pre-event news briefing at the University of Lagos, Akoka, the Global President of the Federal Government Girls’ College Oyo Old Girls Association, Professor Ayodele Atsenuwa said the Old Girls’ Association had instituted legacy projects such as solar electricity with capacity to power 11 blocks of 8 classrooms each, the administrative blocks and the renovated, well-furnished school library, as well as solar-powered boreholes to serve five student hostels and the kitchen.

She said: “The N44 million Legacy Projects to be commissioned at the Special Assembly being convened on Saturday, 19th October are: Solar Electricity intervention with capacity to power 11 blocks of 8 classrooms each, the administrative blocks and the School Library.

“Solar powered flood lights to the kitchen area, a renovated, well-furnished modern School Library, solar powered boreholes to serve 5 student hostels and the kitchen.

“The projects will be commissioned by the Honourable Minister of State for Education, Alhaji Yusuf Tanko Sununu.”

Professor Atsenuwa, a legal scholar and the Deputy Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos, highlighted the three-day activities to mark the golden jubilee of the school.

“The 50th anniversary celebratory events, which will take place over 3 days will also feature the following activities. On Friday, 18th of October 2024, a motorcade rally through Oyo Town culminating in a visit to the Palace of the Alaafin of Oyo, where we expect to be received by the Basorun of Oyo. As we all know, a new Alaafin is yet to be installed after the demise of Alaafin Lamidi Adeyemi; Juma’at Service in the School, an evening of social activities with the current students.

“Saturday, 19th of October 2024, a special convocation of all old girls, current students, current and former staff of the school, representatives of the Parents and Teachers Association, and special guests including the distinguished senator representing Oyo Central Senatorial District and the Honourable Member of the House of Representatives representing the Afijio/Oyo East/Oyo West/Atiba Federal Constituency, Our Guest Speaker at the event is Mr. Olasupo Sasore, SAN, the former Hon. Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Lagos State. A Fund Raising and Gala Nite.

“Sunday, 20th of October 2024, Thanksgiving Service in Oyo and Ibadan.”

Professor Atsenuwa, who also spoke on the federal government policy on students being eighteen years old before gaining admission into the university, said the policy was not new.

The university administrator, explained that there was more to university education than academic brilliance, urging parents and guardians not to rush their children and wards through school.

Professor Atsenuwa said unity schools had contributed to national unity and cohesion and that the federal government should be encouraged to continue with such laudable projects.

In a remark, the Chairperson of the 50th Anniversary Planning Committee, Mrs Ayodeji Ikotun said the plan was to raise N82 million for various legacy projects but that so far the committee had realised about N50 million.

She appealed to well-meaning Nigerians to support the school and other unity schools to maintain their standards and continue to enhance national unity.
