NAMA Assures Safe Air Navigation Services Amidst Labour Dispute

The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), says, the Nigerian airspace is open to flight operations despite the ongoing strike by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC).

According to a statement by the NAMA’s spokesman, Alhaji Abdullahi Musa, the strike has not in any way affected the operations of the agency as contingency arrangements have been put in place for the processing of flight operations in the five major airports in Nigeria which include Lagos, Kano, Port Harcourt, Abuja and Enugu.

He assured that, NAMA will continue to provide its services to airline operators in spite of the ongoing industrial action in keeping with its mandate to provide uninterrupted, safe, efficient, and economic air navigation services in the country.

Meanwhile, domestic flight operations are still at a standstill as aviation unions blocked all entry and exit gates of all airports in the country.

At the Lagos airport, the local wings of the airport are still under lock, labour unions are patrolling the area to ensure no activities take place at the terminals.

Due to the development on Monday when passengers could not access the terminals, no intending passengers as at this morning has come to the airport.

The airport environment is like a grave yard, vehicular movement is light, aviation agency, ancillary service provider offices are still under lock.

However, international flights and the current Hajj Operations are not affected as labour has been prevailed on not to hamper facilitation.

The General Secretary, National Union of Air Transport Employees NUATE Comrade ocheme Aba in a telephone interview said, all the members of the National Executive Council, NEC, of all the unions are currently in a meeting to assess the progress of the day one of the strike.

On whether they may call off the strike today, he said, that would rest with the leadership of the labour unions, adding that, after their meeting today, the way forward would be unveiled.
