1,200 Teachers to Benefit from CASIO/SKLD Training in Lagos

One thousand two hundred teachers in Lagos State public schools are to be trained on how to use enquiry and accuracy in teaching and learning.

The programme which will run from November 2023 to March 2024 is part of a CASIO/SKLD Model School Project to equip teachers with modern requisite skills for the 21st century.

The theme of the training is, “Equipping Educators with Enquiry-based Methodology and Accuracy Skills in the 21st Century Classroom.”

The programme began in 2018 with the training of more than three thousand teachers in Lagos State public schools, and the construction of an education laboratory for training master trainers at the State Education Resource Centre, Ojodu.

At the launch of the current cycle of the project, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr Jamiu Alli-Balogun said the programme would ensure students have the needed skills to excel in their academics and life.

“As educators, it is our responsibility to equip them with the tools they need to navigate this complex world and succeed in an ever-changing society.

“Enquiry-based methodology lies at the heart of this transformation. It empowers students to ask questions, explore multiple perspectives, and critically analyze information. By engaging in inquiry, they develop essential skills such as problem-solving, creativity, and effective communication.

“Equally important in the 21st century classroom is the emphasis on accuracy skills. In an era of abundant information, students must learn to recognise fact from fiction, evaluate sources critically, and engage in rigorous research. As educators, we must equip ourselves with the necessary skills and knowledge to guide our students in this process,” he concluded.

The Permanent Secretary in the State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Mr Abayomi Abolaji said partnerships were important to quality education, adding that the project was an opportunity for the state to improve on its education standards.

The Chairman of the State Teaching Service Commission, Mrs Victoria Peregrino solicited the support of teachers to ensure the success of the programme.

The Deputy Managing Director, SKLD Integrated Services Limited, Mr Tayo Osiyemi revealed that one classroom in each of the five educational districts of the state would be renovated and equipped for continuous capacity development for teachers and students.

The General Manager, Casio Middle East and Africa, Mr Koji Shimada said the company was proud to support education in Lagos State to see future leaders imbued with relevant skills for the modern society.

Casio also donated one thousand two hundred scientific calculators to the trainers.
