The Lagos State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has joined millions of Nigerians in celebrating Democracy Day 2026, a historic occasion that reminds us of the sacrifices, courage, resilience, and patriotism of those who fought tirelessly to secure and sustain democratic governance in our country.
As Nigeria marks 27 years of uninterrupted democratic rule under the Fourth Republic and reflects on the 33rd anniversary of the historic June 12, 1993, Presidential Election, we are reminded that democracy was won through sacrifice, patriotism, and a steadfast belief in the sovereignty of the people.
The Chairman of APC in Lagos, Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi, in a statement, paid tribute to the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (M.K.O.) Abiola, the symbol of the June 12 struggle, whose sacrifice remains one of the defining moments in Nigeria’s democratic journey, saying the party also honour the memory of the late Kudirat Abiola and countless pro-democracy activists, journalists, labour leaders, students, women, civil society advocates, and ordinary Nigerians who endured persecution, imprisonment, exile, and even paid the supreme price in the struggle to restore democratic rule in our nation.
Pastor Ojelabi said the sacrifices of the heroes remain the bedrock of the democratic freedoms that Nigerians enjoy today, and their legacy continues to inspire our collective pursuit of justice, freedom, national unity, and progress.
The APC Lagos State Chapter saluted former President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, for his historic decision to officially recognize June 12 as Nigeria’s Democracy Day and accord deserved national honours to Chief M.K.O. Abiola and other heroes of democracy, saying that the courageous decision corrected a long-standing historical injustice and permanently aligned our national democratic celebration with the true symbol of the Nigerian people’s democratic struggle.
He also saluted President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, a foremost democrat and one of the leading figures in the struggle for the actualisation of the June 12 mandate, saying his courage during the darkest days of military rule, his contributions to the pro-democracy movement, and his continuing commitment to democratic governance have earned him a distinguished place in Nigeria’s democratic history.
As Nigerians commemorate this year’s Democracy Day, the party called on all members, leaders, stakeholders, and supporters to continue to uphold the values of peace, unity, discipline, loyalty, and mutual respect that have sustained our success over the years, saying that APC remains the most formidable political movement in Lagos State and Nigeria. Our achievements, our organisational strength, our unity of purpose, and our record of progressive governance have made our party a reference point for political success and development. Many admire what we have built; many seek to emulate our model; and many desire the position we occupy today.
Meanwhile, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC and Lead Visioner of the Lagos4Lagos Movement,
Dr Abdul-Azeez Olajide Adediran JANDOR has also congratulated Lagosians and Nigerians alike on the occasion of the 2026 Democracy Day celebration.
Dr. Adediran states that June 12 occupies a unique place in Nigeria’s political history as a symbol of the people’s collective struggle for democratic governance, justice and the sanctity of the ballot. It serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by patriots who stood firmly for democratic ideals and ultimately paved the way for the democratic system we enjoy today.
As we commemorate this historic day, it is important for all of us to place nation-building above personal interests and partisan considerations. The strength of any democracy lies in the commitment of its Leaders to the common good, the rule of law and the welfare of the people on one hand, and to the citizen’s observance of their civic responsibility on the other hand.
JANDOR also encouraged Nigerian youths to become active participants in the political process. From party membership and policy engagement to electoral participation and public service, young people must take ownership of the nation’s future. Given Nigeria’s predominantly youthful population and the significant voting strength of young citizens, they possess the capacity to influence governance and drive meaningful change across the country.
JANDOR commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for demonstrating courage through bold policy decisions and for providing transformational leadership aimed at repositioning Nigeria for sustainable economic growth and national development.
He also applauded the president and the security agencies for their renewed efforts and notable successes in tackling insecurity, kidnapping, banditry and other criminal activities threatening national peace and stability.
In another development, the Allied Peoples Movement, APM, Lagos State Chapter, has congratulated all Lagosians on the occasion of this year’s Democracy Day, a day set aside to celebrate the resilience, sacrifices, and unwavering commitment of Nigerians to democratic governance.
The Publicity Secretary of the Allied Peoples Movement, Mr Ayodele Kazeem, said as Nigerians commemorate this historic day, the party salutes the courage, patience, and steadfastness of the good people of Lagos State who continue to endure economic hardship, infrastructural challenges, insecurity, unemployment, and the rising cost of living while maintaining faith in the democratic process.
He said that democracy thrives when government remains accountable to the people and when the dividends of governance are fairly distributed to all citizens, saying unfortunately, many Lagosians are yet to fully enjoy the benefits of the enormous resources and opportunities available in our great state, saying across communities, from urban centres to rural settlements, millions continue to yearn for a government that prioritises their welfare and places the interests of the people above all else.
The Allied Peoples Movement reassured Lagosians that a brighter future is possible as the party remain committed to offering a credible, people-oriented, and inclusive alternative that will transform governance in Lagos State, saying that the party’s vision is to build a Lagos where every citizen has access to quality education, affordable healthcare, improved transportation, economic opportunities, security, and social welfare.
