The Chairman of the Special Committee on Renovation of Public Schools (SCRPS) in Lagos State, Hakeem Smith, has revealed that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration has constructed and renovated over 4,000 classrooms since assuming office in 2019.
Speaking at a news briefing in Lagos on Tuesday ahead of the inauguration of 16 new classroom blocks on Wednesday, Smith highlighted the governor’s extensive investments in public school infrastructure across the state.
He noted that since Governor Sanwo-Olu revived the committee in 2019, the state has rehabilitated 386 blocks of classrooms in primary and secondary schools across Lagos’ six education districts.
Additionally, 1,290 new classroom blocks have been constructed, with several other projects ongoing.
Schools Benefiting from the Renovation Efforts
Smith listed some of the schools that have benefited from these interventions, including:
• King Ado Junior and Senior High School
• Isale Eko Junior and Senior Grammar School
• Cherubim and Seraphim Nursery and Primary School 1, Owutu, Ikorodu
• Pastor Adegboyega Nursery and Primary School, Alapere Ketu
• Iganmu Junior High School, Iganmu
Introduction of Modular and Digitally Equipped Classrooms
Smith also highlighted the construction of modular classrooms, such as the one at Vetland Junior Grammar School, Agege, commissioned three years ago. Similar projects are currently underway at:
• Girls Junior Secondary School, Lalupon, Ikoyi
• Lagos Baptist Secondary School, Obanikoro
• Ogba Junior Secondary School
These modern classrooms are equipped with digital teaching tools, allowing teachers to conduct lessons using digital screens while students follow along with iPads or smartphones.
Massive School Projects Underway in Ajegunle
To address challenges in Ajegunle, the Lagos State Government has embarked on a large-scale construction and rehabilitation project at the Tolu School Complex.
The complex accommodates:
• 16 senior secondary schools
• 15 junior secondary schools
• Five primary schools
• Approximately 20,000 students
Smith described the project as a future tourist attraction due to its modern facilities that will redefine public school infrastructure in Lagos.
Upcoming Classroom Inauguration Across the State
The inauguration of 16 new classroom blocks will begin on Wednesday, March 19, with the governor inaugurating new structures at:
• Keme Balogun School in Ibeshe, Ikorodu
• Ajegunle Junior Secondary School in Kosofe
Lagos Government’s Continued Commitment to Education
Lagos State Commissioner for Basic Education, Tolani Alli-Balogun, reaffirmed Governor Sanwo-Olu’s dedication to education, describing the upcoming inauguration as “another milestone” in the state’s T.H.E.M.E.S agenda.
“Education is dear to the governor’s heart. TESCOM has recruited 500 teachers, and the governor has approved a ₦2 billion allocation for WAEC examination fees for SS3 students,” he added.
