Lagosians have been encouraged to adopt a lifestyle that promotes sustainability, holding businesses accountable while working together to create a Lagos where prosperity and environmental responsibility coexist.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu stated this in a message to this year’s World Consumer Rights Day, organized by the Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency, LASCOPA, in GRA Ikeja.
He urged local business owners to implement sustainable practices and ethical marketing strategies, emphasizing that these would not only enhance their reputation but also contribute to a more sustainable Lagos.
Governor Sanwo-Olu called on community leaders and organizations to collaborate with the government on sustainability projects that shape policies and initiatives.
He highlighted the importance of providing valuable insights into effective waste management and renewable energy solutions.
Represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Mrs. Abimbola Salu-Hundeyin, the Governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to bridging the gap between producers and consumers to foster mutual understanding and partnerships that drive innovation while addressing market challenges.
He noted that the state government is strengthening its consumer protection frameworks, including enforcement mechanisms and penalties for non-compliance, as outlined in the Lagos Consumer Protection Agency Law to make eco-friendly products more accessible, promote ethical business practices, and encourage responsible consumption.
The Governor appealed to stakeholders to use the celebration as an opportunity to inspire change, promote eco-friendly practices, and uphold consumer rights to build a more sustainable future.
He said that the celebration of World Consumer Rights Day in 2025, this annual event reminds stakeholders of the vital role consumers play in shaping our economy and the immense responsibility we share in ensuring their rights are upheld.
The Governor applauded the Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency, LASCOPA for its steadfast dedication to safeguarding consumer interests and promoting fair business practices.
In her welcome address, the Commissioner for Commerce, Cooperatives, Trade, and Investment, Mrs. Folashade Ambrose-Medebem, stated that consumers play a central role in shaping markets, influencing businesses, and driving innovation.
She urged stakeholders to ensure that the transition to a more sustainable future is just, inclusive, and beneficial for all.
She said that ‘the past decade has seen record-high temperatures, rising pollution levels, and increasing threats to biodiversity” noting that the environmental challenges are not merely ecological concerns; they have significant impacts on economies, businesses, and consumers. As we seek solutions, it is essential to ensure that sustainable choices are not only available but also accessible and affordable, particularly for vulnerable and low-income consumers.
She emphasized the need to protect consumers’ rights to essential goods, ensuring that citizens have access to clean energy, safe food, affordable healthcare, and sustainable housing.
She urged business owners to adhere strictly to ethical and sustainable practices while private sector players must integrate sustainability into their supply chains, reduce waste, and offer eco-friendly products at fair prices.
Contributing, the General Manager of the Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency, Mr Afolabi Solebo, noted that this year’s celebration offered an opportunity for stakeholders to discuss and champion consumer rights.
He stated that the observance of World Consumer Rights Day, themed “A Just Transition to Sustainable Lifestyles,” underscored the need for consumers and stakeholders to participate in shaping a sustainable future that upholds fairness, accessibility, and inclusivity.
Mr Solebo affirmed that the agency would lead the charge in advocating for consumer rights, ensuring that policies, programs, and initiatives align with the evolving needs of consumers while fostering a sustainable and just marketplace.
