Drug Abuse Identified as Leading Cause of Road Crashes

Substance use and abuse are responsible for over sixty percent of the accidents that occur on the highways.

This was the submission of guests on issues in the News, a Radio One News magazine programme.

Consultant Psychiatrist, Federal Medical Centre, Aro, Abeokuta, Dr Ayantunde Ayankola said substance abuse while driving implies that
Chemical is on the wheel, as drugs becloud vision, alter reasoning and stability leading to accidents and risky behaviour on the highways.

Dr Ayankola advised road users to cut down on use of substances or stop as it causes more harm on internal organs by shortening their lives and damaging their organs.

On her part, public education officer, Federal Road Safety Corps, Route Commander Oluwadamilola Jayeola noted that the millenia and the gen z’s needs to be spoken to more about the abuse of substance as they constitute the higher number of those who drive under influence.

Route Commander Jayeola also admonished passengers to call to order any reckless driver and report them at the next spot where traffic or security agencies are because they have a responsibility for staying alive.

The guests further warned that constant use of alcohol, Marijuana, cannabis, colorado or colos and many more does permanent damage on the internal organs and ultimately leads to death.
