The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission, LASIEC has encouraged eligible voters to turn out enmasse to participate in the July 12 Local Government Election in the state.
Chairman of the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission, LASIEC, Retired Justice Bola Okikiolu – Ighile, stated this during an interview with Radio Nigeria’s team of Correspondents.
According to Justice Okikiolu – Ighile, the election will take place in the twenty Local Government and thirty – seven Local Council Development Areas of Lagos State, while nineteen political parties will be involved in the process.
Justice Okikiolu – Ighile regretted that only seven million out of fifteen million people registered for the last election, representing not more than twenty- five percent of participants in the elections, which depictss voter apathy.
The LASIEC Chairman encouraged the electorate to keep faith in the political reforms that will empower the voter as the most important stakeholder during any electoral process.
Emphasizing the importance of education, Justice Okikiolu – Ighile said that the commission has commenced engagements with critical stakeholders including the political parties, youths, security agencies, media professionals and People Living With Disabilities.
She added that LASIEC had already toured its offices in the 57 Council Areas, where it engaged Electoral Officers ahead of the poll.
The LASIEC Chairman assured that the commission would deliver a most credible Local Government Election in lagos state.
LASIEC Commissioners, Oladele Adekanye and Oluwo Akin Durojaiye, as well as the Permanent Secretary, Mr Abdul Rafiu Omowole Fashola, were present at the Media Roundtable.
