The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has commenced a sweeping enforcement campaign aimed at restoring traffic order, clearing illegal obstructions, and improving road discipline across Lagos.
Announcing the development, Adebayo Taofiq, LASTMA’s Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, described the operation as a critical response to growing indiscipline on Lagos roads. Taofiq, a respected voice in urban mobility advocacy, noted that the clampdown reflects the agency’s zero-tolerance stance on traffic violations and public nuisance.
“This enforcement drive is about protecting lives, property, and the integrity of our public roadways. Lagosians deserve sanity on their roads,” he stated.
The statewide operation is being led by the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, with coordinated deployments across high-traffic zones including Oyingbo, Iddo, Eja-Lonibu, Adeniji Adele, Sabo, Jibowu, and Oshodi—areas notorious for congestion, illegal parking, and indiscriminate street trading.
During the first phase, a total of 235 vehicles were impounded for various offences under the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law, 2018. The breakdown includes: 156 commercial buses (Danfo), 38 private vehicles, 19 minibuses/tricycles (Korope), 17 inter-state buses and 5 haulage trucks.
In one incident, five articulated trucks were intercepted atop the Adeniji Adele Bridge, where they were illegally offloading livestock and abattoir waste. The drivers involved face imminent prosecution for endangering public safety and violating sanitation laws.
Additionally, 10 suspected miscreants were arrested for disrupting traffic flow and engaging in unlawful transport activities.
Mr. Bakare-Oki emphasized that the enforcement will be sustained across all five divisions of Lagos—Ikeja, Badagry, Ikorodu, Lagos Island, and Epe—as part of the state government’s broader urban renewal efforts.
“LASTMA now operates under a strict zero-tolerance mandate. Any vehicle found violating traffic laws will be impounded and prosecuted accordingly,” he warned.
Residents are encouraged to report traffic infractions, illegal activities, and misconduct by enforcement officers through LASTMA’s toll-free hotline: 080000527862. The Authority assures that every credible complaint will be addressed promptly.
