Lagos State Government has unveiled three new train sets—each comprising four coaches—for the Lagos Blue Line Rail corridor. The unveiling ceremony, held at the Iganmu Train Station, marks a significant milestone in the state’s commitment to improving mass transit infrastructure.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who led the official handover to the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), attributed the timely delivery of the trains to the steadfast support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He said the procurement aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda of the federal government and Lagos’ THEMES Plus development agenda.
“These new trains will double passenger capacity, reduce wait times, and offer commuters a more predictable and efficient travel experience,” the governor said. “We are determined to reduce journey times across the state and provide infrastructure that reflects the quality of life our people deserve.”
Sanwo-Olu was accompanied at the event by the Managing Director of LAMATA, Engr. Abimbola Akinajo, along with members of the State Executive Council. He noted that the trains would now arrive every 10 to 15 minutes, significantly easing congestion and improving commuter confidence.
The governor also gave an update on the Blue Line extension project from Mile 2 to Okokomaiko, assuring Lagosians that construction is on track for completion by 2026.
“We urge residents to remain hopeful and confident in this administration. The dividends of democracy are becoming visible, and this is just the beginning,” he said.
In addition, Sanwo-Olu revealed that more rolling stock is expected for the Red Line rail corridor before the end of the year, as part of wider efforts to ease the cost and time of transportation for residents.
The new train sets are part of a broader strategy to modernize Lagos’ transport network and position the state as a model for sustainable urban mobility in Africa.
