The Lagos State Government has directed the immediate reopening of the Oko-Oba Abattoir, following substantial compliance with sanitation and hygiene requirements by its operators.
This was contained in a statement signed by the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, who noted that the operators had met the minimum benchmark required for abattoir operations in the state.
The facility had earlier been shut down on June 20 after a routine inspection revealed widespread violations of laws guiding safe and hygienic operations.
Mr. Wahab stated that as part of the reopening conditions, the abattoir will now undergo monthly inspections by officials of the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources.
He further warned operators to steer clear of unsanitary practices, improper waste disposal, and unhygienic handling of animal products, urging them to uphold the standards required for public health and environmental safety.
