The Lagos State Government has indefinitely shut down Purple Mall in Lekki following a tragic incident in its parking lot that claimed the life of a young Nigerian on Wednesday.
Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, announced the closure in a statement, describing it as a necessary step to safeguard public safety and allow for a comprehensive investigation into the fatal event.
According to Wahab, a specialized team has been constituted to probe the incident, with a mandate to determine both the immediate and underlying causes, assess compliance with building and safety standards, and uncover any environmental or structural infractions.
“This heartbreaking accident was entirely preventable. We will ensure accountability and implement corrective measures to avert future occurrences. Lagosians deserve safe public spaces, and we will not compromise on this,” the Commissioner stated.
Wahab expressed condolences to the victim’s family and assured the public of transparency and diligence in the investigation.
He also reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to enforcing strict environmental and safety regulations across all commercial and public infrastructure in Lagos.
Regular updates on the findings of the investigation are expected to be provided as efforts to ensure justice and safety move forward.
