NHRC Records 351 Child Rights Violation Cases in Kano Between April, June

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in Kano State has disclosed that it recorded 351 cases of child rights violations out of 446 total human rights complaints received between April and June 2025.

This was revealed by the NHRC Kano State Coordinator, Alhaji Shehu Abdullahi, during a press briefing in Kano.

He expressed deep concern over the alarming rise in cases involving children, which constitute nearly 80 percent of all reported rights violations in the state during the period under review.

According to Abdullahi, the other cases recorded include:19 cases of domestic violence18 cases involving economic and social rights.

He noted that several cases related to accusations of witchcraft and other harmful cultural practices were also documented under the broad spectrum of human rights abuses.

Neglect and Family Breakdown Behind Most Cases

Alhaji Shehu blamed family and societal neglect for the growing incidence of child rights violations and juvenile delinquency, warning that the increasing number of children roaming the streets, scavenging, and living in dire conditions is a reflection of deeper systemic issues.

“Family and societal negligence is the major cause of child delinquency and the rising incidence of criminal activities among youths,” he stated.

He pointed out that while only seven cases involved state actors, the vast majority of the violations were committed in domestic and matrimonial settings, indicating a disturbing trend of abuse within the family unit.
