The Lagos State House of Assembly on Tuesday received representatives of the Centre for Human and Socio-Economic Rights (CHSR), who staged a peaceful protest at the Assembly complex in Alausa, demanding immediate implementation of the Lagos State Local Government Administrative Law.
The protesters, led by CHSR President, Comrade Alex Omotehinse, submitted a formal position paper expressing concern over the delay in enforcing the law, which was passed by the Assembly and assented to by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on May 7, 2025.
While a recent Executive Order by the Governor scheduled the commencement of the law for August 4, 2025, CHSR described the delay as unconstitutional and politically motivated.
Comrade Omotehinse argued that once a law is signed, it becomes binding unless a specific commencement date is provided in the legislation. He added that the current delay undermines legislative authority, democratic principles, and the rule of law.
In its petition, CHSR urged the Assembly to uphold the sanctity of its legislative role by rejecting any form of executive interference and demanding immediate implementation of the law. The group also recommended the postponement of the upcoming Local Government elections slated for July 12, 2025, if the law remains unenforced by then.
Additionally, the rights group called for the constitution of caretaker committees in the 57 Local Governments and Local Council Development Areas to manage council affairs following the expiration of the current chairmen’s tenures.
Responding on behalf of the House, Hon. Abiodun Tobun, representing Epe Constituency I, acknowledged receipt of the protest letter and assured the group that its concerns would be forwarded to the relevant quarters for appropriate action.
“The House has received your memorandum and will look into the issues raised. Be assured that due legislative attention will be given,” Hon. Tobun stated.
The protest ended peacefully, with the group reiterating its commitment to democratic values and transparency in local governance.
