Coalition of Political Parties in Lagos commends LASIEC for credible LG election

The Coalition of Political Parties in Lagos State has commended the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission, LASIEC for conducting free, fair, and credible elections in the recently concluded local government elections.

During a media briefing in Ikeja, the coalition’s spokesperson, Mr. Kola Ajayi, praised the leadership of LASIEC Chairman Justice Bola Okikiolu-Ighile and her dedicated team for their professionalism and commitment to electoral integrity, especially in the face of notable challenges.

Mr. Ajayi also acknowledged the security agencies for their neutrality and professionalism throughout the electoral process, which significantly contributed to the peaceful conduct of the elections.

While congratulating the candidates who emerged victorious, Mr. Ajayi urged the elected chairmen and councillors to embrace the spirit of sportsmanship and magnanimity in victory, emphasising that true leadership is measured by service and inclusivity.

The Convener of the Coalition of Political Parties in Lagos State and former IPAC Chairman, Mr Akinola Obadia expressed concern about the persistent issue of voter apathy, stating that it does not reflect well on democracy.

He advocated for the establishment of a tripartite engagement mechanism involving the State Government, LASIEC, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, the National Orientation Agency, civil society organisations, and other relevant stakeholders to strategise on voter education, awareness, and participation ahead of the 2027 general elections to address voter apathy.

Mr. Obadia emphasised the need for the coalition to take urgent steps to rekindle public interest in the electoral process, reminding citizens that voting is not just a right, but a civic responsibility and a powerful tool for change.

He reaffirmed the coalition’s commitment to deepening democracy and strengthening democratic institutions in the state.
