The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), in partnership with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), has commenced a five-day national quality control workshop aimed at strengthening the country’s aviation security oversight system.
The workshop, which began on Monday, July 21, 2025, at the NCAA’s Lagos Regional Office, is part of Nigeria’s efforts to address deficiencies uncovered during the ICAO Universal Security Audit Programme Continuous Monitoring Approach (USAP-CMA) audit conducted in March 2024.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Director General, Civil Aviation, Captain Chris Najomo, represented by the Lagos Regional Manager, Barr. Olubukola Terriba, said the workshop was designed to align Nigeria’s aviation security practices with global standards outlined in ICAO Annex 17.
He expressed optimism that the training would boost Nigeria’s compliance levels and improve its preparedness for future audits.
The initiative is also expected to enhance the country’s capacity to manage aviation security risks through the implementation of a more robust quality control framework.
ICAO’s Aviation Security (AVSEC) Regional Officer for West and Central Africa, Mr. Ademola Oladele, reaffirmed the organization’s technical support for the NCAA and lauded Nigeria’s rising profile in international aviation.
He noted that strong oversight mechanisms are critical for safeguarding the integrity of civil aviation operations across the region.
The workshop has brought together key stakeholders from across the sector, including NCAA’s Director of AVSEC, Dr. Ben Omogo, representatives from the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), commercial airlines, and technical personnel from NCAA’s AVSEC department.
