Security Operatives Accused of Extortion and Intimidation on Ikorodu–Epe Expressway

Security operatives along the Ikorodu–Epe Expressway are under intense public scrutiny following widespread reports of extortion, harassment, and abuse of power at numerous checkpoints along the route.

Sources say nearly fourteen roadblocks have been mounted by various police units, where officers routinely extort motorists, stopping vehicles and demanding illegal payments—often under threat of detention or delay.

The Rapid Response Squad (RRS), previously known for its anti-crime operations across Lagos, has now been implicated.

Eyewitnesses allege that RRS operatives are extorting commercial drivers, collecting ₦200 per vehicle during so-called “routine checks.”

The situation is reportedly more severe around the Agbowa–Imota axis, where military personnel have set up a checkpoint and allegedly enforced an unofficial ban on mobile phone use for both drivers and passengers.

Vehicles approaching the area are subjected to intimidation, with reports of soldiers confiscating and smashing phones seen in use.

These developments have triggered public outrage, with many road users condemning the behavior of both police and military personnel.

Critics argue that instead of providing protection, the security agents are heightening fear and insecurity along the busy corridor.

Commuters have described the road as a “corridor of fear and extortion,” calling for urgent intervention from the Lagos State Government and security authorities.

There is growing concern that the unchecked abuse is rapidly eroding public confidence in the very institutions meant to guarantee their safety.
