Renowned for his reflexes, leadership, and calm under pressure, he represented Nigeria in two FIFA World Cups—1994 in the USA and 1998 in France—serving as the first-choice goalkeeper in both tournaments.

Among his most memorable accomplishments:1994 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Champion: Rufai was instrumental in Nigeria’s triumph, making critical saves throughout the tournament, including a key penalty stop in the semi-final against Ivory Coast.

More Than an Athlete

Rufai’s influence extended beyond the pitch.

He was closely associated with Radio One 103.5FM, collaborating with the station on several initiatives championed by General Manager Anikéadé Funke Treasure and amplified across FRCN’s Network Transmission.

Mrs Bolanle Owoyemi, Director of FRCN Lagos Operations, described him as “more than just a friend to the FRCN family.

His passion for grassroots development went beyond the pitch, and he will be greatly missed by many.”

As an ambassador to Radio One 103.5FM, Rufai participated in multiple public outreach events, often appearing alongside other Nigerian sports icons like Dosu Joseph, Yomi Opkakunle, and Chioma Ajunwa.

A Lasting Legacy

Peter Rufai’s contributions to football and national development endure beyond his years. He remains a role model for aspiring athletes and a symbol of discipline, dedication, and excellence in Nigerian sports.

His passing leaves a deep void, but his name will forever be etched in Nigeria’s football history.

May his memory continue to inspire and be a blessing to the football community and the nation.
