Women in Logistics and Transport (WiLAT) Nigeria has called on women professionals in the sector to embrace Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a tool for empowerment and operational transformation.
Speaking at this year’s WiLAT Day in Lagos, with the theme: “The Role of Artificial Intelligence in Women’s Empowerment for Effective Business in Logistics and Transport Operations”, Chairperson Mrs. Khadijat Sheidu-Shabi described the gathering as both a celebration of progress and a pivotal moment in the digital evolution of the industry.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is about to change the logistics and transport industry in a big way, creating new chances to work faster, stay safer, and protect the environment.
In her opening address at the Women in Logistics and Transport Day, the chairperson, Mrs Mrs. Khadijat Sheidu-Shabi stressed that AI, already a global driver of efficiency and innovation, must also be harnessed to create greater inclusion and leadership opportunities for women in logistics and transport.
“It challenges us to rethink our roles as professionals, leaders, and advocates of change for greater inclusion and Excellence in logistics and transport. We find ourselves at a critical intersection between digital innovation and gender inclusion-the two forces that when combined, can radically redefine our sector”.
International Vice President of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) Africa Forum, Alhaji Jubril Ibrahim, noted in his goodwill message that AI holds immense potential to improve efficiency in the sector.
From predictive analytics for shipment delays to automated warehouse operations and 24-hour customer support via chatbots, he said AI could significantly reshape the industry.
However, he emphasized that technology cannot replace the ingenuity and problem-solving abilities of human professionals, particularly women who navigate complex operational and organizational challenges.
“So here’s to women leveraging Al, not to be replaced by it, but to finally delegate the paperwork to a machine that won’t complain about overtime. May Al empower you to automate the tedious, innovate the impossible and occasionally reboot the Wi-Fi router (because even tech needs a push)”.
Resource persons at the event, Dr. Olayinka Agunloye, Associate professor of Transport and Logistics, of the University of Lagos and Chief Jean Chiazor-Anishere, SAN, speaking on the Day’s theme, stressed the need for women to move beyond AI buzzwords and take practical steps toward leveraging technology for competitive advantage.
Another resource person, Major Gen. Tilewa Amusu, Commander Nigerian Army Medical Corps emphasized on promoting medical wellbeing while speaking on the topic: “Wellness Wears No Label:I’m Promoting Mental Well Being”.
They also encouraged senior female professionals to mentor younger women to ensure a strong pipeline of leaders in the digital era.
There were also goodwill messages from the National President, CILT, Nigeria, Mrs Mfon Usoro, WiLAT founder, Hajia Aisha Ali-Ibrahim and the WiLAT Deputy Global Chairperson, Mrs Doreen Owusu-Fianko.
International, CILT President, Chief Teete Owusu-Nortey in his opening remarks, applauded WiLAT for being role models and promoting the activities of the body and pledged the support of the body to continually assist WiLAT to succeed in their endeavours.
In her vote of thanks, the WiLAT Public Relations and Chairperson, Aviation Mode, Mrs Queen Ajayi expressed appreciation to dignitaries and guests that graced the event.
She emphasized that, WiLAT members are poised to leverage not just technology but AI to drive the progress, growth and development of the transport and logistics sector and enhance their personal career growth.
