2027 Elections: INEC Warns Against Early Campaigns, Cites Electoral Act Violations

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has cautioned political parties and aspirants against engaging in premature campaigning ahead of the 2027 general elections.

‎This warning was issued on Monday by the Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, Mr. Rotimi Oyekanmi, amid increasing concerns over subtle campaign activities, including the display of posters and indirect endorsements across the country.

‎Mr. Oyekanmi clarified that INEC is yet to release the official timetable and schedule for the 2027 elections, stressing that any form of political campaigning at this stage is unlawful.

‎“In line with Section 94(1) of the Electoral Act 2022, campaigns in public by political parties are only permitted to commence 150 days before the scheduled election date and must end 24 hours prior to polling,” he explained.

‎He further referenced Section 95(1) of the same Act, which requires candidates and their parties to conduct campaigns strictly in accordance with INEC’s guidelines.

‎“While Nigerians are free to discuss political matters and express their opinions, open solicitation for votes or campaign activities for the 2027 elections are not only inappropriate but also constitute a breach of the law,” he said.

‎The electoral body also confirmed that this issue was formally addressed at its recent quarterly consultative meeting with all registered political parties, urging strict adherence to legal provisions.

‎INEC emphasized its commitment to upholding the integrity of the electoral process and warned that it would not hesitate to take appropriate action against any individual or group flouting the rules.
