NAWOJ Zone D calls for Urgent Action on Insecurity

The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ, Zone D, has called on the Federal Government and state authorities to take decisive and proactive steps in addressing the escalating insecurity and humanitarian challenges in the North Central region, especially in Benue and Plateau States.

The call was made during the Zone’s virtual bi-monthly meeting which was presided over by the Zonal Vice President, Mrs Chizoba Ogbeche.

In a communique issued at the end of the meeting, the Association expressed grave concern over the increasing frequency of violent attacks on communities in the region, which have left women and children most vulnerable.

It urged the six state Governments in the zone and the FCT administration to rejig the security efforts through proactive policing, timely arrests, and diligent prosecution of perpetrators.

The Association further appealed to the Federal Government to equip security agencies with more sophisticated weaponry and surveillance technology, noting that this would enable them to better counter insurgents.

NAWOJ Zone D expressed gratitude to Nigeria’s First Lady, Remi Tinubu, for her support and generous donations towards victims of violent attacks in Plateau and Benue States, while calling on the state Governments to ensure transparency in the disbursement of funds to ensure they reach the intended victims and affected communities.

The Association also highlighted the growing number of displaced children whose education had been disrupted due to insecurity.

It urged the First Lady and her counterparts in the affected states to champion efforts that would not only empower women but also ensure displaced children return to school.

The communique commended the efforts of women groups and civil society organisations, on the progress made in campaigning for the passage of the Special Seats for Women in Parliament Bill.

The Association stressed the importance of sustaining advocacy and legislative engagement until the bill becomes law.
