The West African Examinations Council, WAEC, has apologised to Nigerians after admitting errors in the recently released 2025 Senior School Certificate Examination results.
Following a review, WAEC announced that 1,239,884 candidates, representing 62.9% of those who sat the examination, obtained at least five credits including English Language and Mathematics, a sharp improvement from the earlier figure of 38.3%.
Head of the National Office, Dr Amos Dangut, told newsmen in Lagos that the error was caused by a wrong code file used in grading serialised English Language objective papers.
Mathematics, Biology and Economics papers were also reviewed.
Dr Dangut said schools that wrote the exams using the computer-based mode were not affected. He stressed that all affected results have now been corrected and uploaded on the WAEC portal, urging candidates to recheck their scores and apply for their digital certificates within 48 hours.
While expressing regret over the mix-up, WAEC promised that measures have been put in place to prevent a recurrence.
The revised results show 657,819 female candidates and 582,065 male candidates achieved credit passes in five subjects including English and Mathematics.
This year’s performance, however, is still 9.16% lower than 2024 when 72.12% of candidates met the benchmark.
