Abuja — Former Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, Mr. Peter Obi, has expressed deep concern over what he described as the worsening state of insecurity in the country.
In a statement posted on his official X handle, Mr. Obi quoted figures from Amnesty International, which estimated that more than 10,000 Nigerians have been killed by terrorists, bandits, and other armed groups within the past two years of the current administration.
He noted that the scale of violence was alarming, comparing the number of civilian deaths in Nigeria to those recorded in Ukraine, a country currently at war.
Mr. Obi drew attention to recent incidents including the killing of worshippers in a mosque in Katsina State, the abduction of over 60 people in the same state, as well as the killing of more than 15 farmers in Mangu, Plateau State, which displaced hundreds of families.
According to him, the tragic situation highlights the urgent need for government and political leaders to prioritize the safety and security of citizens above politics and personal interests.
He further emphasized that the primary duty of any government is the protection of lives and property, insisting that Nigeria must rise to confront the challenge before it spirals further out of control.
Mr. Obi called on leaders across political divides to put aside politicking and work together in finding lasting solutions to the insecurity threatening peace and stability in the country.
