‎NIPOST: Shipment to US Now Attracts $80 Customs Duty

The Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) has announced that all postal items sent to the United States, excluding letters and documents, will now attract a mandatory customs duty of $80 (or its Naira equivalent) at the point of acceptance in Nigeria.

‎Change Linked to Trump’s Executive Order

‎In a notice to customers on Friday, NIPOST explained that the new charges follow an executive order by US President Donald Trump suspending the duty-free de minimis treatment for all countries under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA).

‎The agency clarified that the measure is not limited to Nigeria but applies to all postal administrations and operators worldwide.

‎Possible Delays in Delivery

‎NIPOST further warned that the development could result in delays in handling US-bound parcels, as airlines and cargo carriers are adopting stricter procedures for shipments to America.

‎“All US-bound items will also undergo additional Customs checks on arrival,” the service noted.

‎Engagement with Global Partners

‎The postal agency assured customers that it is working closely with the Universal Postal Union (UPU), the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP), and its airline partners to reduce service disruptions and ensure reliable delivery.

‎“Despite these regulatory changes, NIPOST remains committed to providing safe, reliable, and efficient postal and courier services,” the statement read.

‎Global Logistics Impact

‎The ripple effects of the new US policy are already being felt globally. Logistics giant DHL confirmed it has introduced temporary restrictions on some business shipments to the United States through its Deutsche Post and DHL Parcel Germany channels, citing uncertainties over customs duty collection.

‎However, the company said its premium DHL Express service remains operational and pledged to restore normal services as soon as possible
