Commuters Decry Extortion and Intimidation Along Ikorodu – Epe Road

Reports from motorists and passengers indicate growing concerns over alleged extortion and harassment by security operatives along the Ikorodu–Epe road in Lagos State.

Radio Nigeria gathered that no fewer than fourteen checkpoints are mounted along the stretch of the highway, manned by police officers, members of the Rapid Response Squad, and soldiers.

At each stop, commercial drivers are allegedly compelled to make cash payments, often pegged at a minimum of ₦200.Some commuters who spoke on condition of anonymity described the behaviour of the operatives as intimidating and disruptive, noting that the situation has become a burden to both drivers and passengers.

A commercial driver narrated how he was once forced to abandon a passenger after soldiers claimed the individual was seen with a mobile phone while in transit.

He appealed to the authorities to intervene and protect motorists from undue harassment.

Another passenger expressed concern that such actions by security operatives were instilling fear among innocent citizens rather than building public confidence in law enforcement.

Residents of the area insist that, while extortion is widespread across the checkpoints, soldiers stationed at the Agbowa axis have become particularly notorious for high-handed conduct.

The Federal Government has consistently emphasized the importance of professionalism among security agencies and their role in protecting citizens.

Stakeholders are therefore calling for a review of operations along the Ikorodu–Epe road to ensure that the activities of security personnel align with established rules of engagement.
