Resident Doctors Begin Five-Day Strike Over Unpaid Allowances

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has today, September 12, 2025, embarked on a five-day warning strike following the expiration of its fresh ultimatum to the Federal Government over unresolved welfare concerns.

NARD said the industrial action became necessary after what it described as government inaction on its long-standing demands.

In a statement, the association’s President, Dr. Tope Osundare, explained that the decision to down tools was reached after a six-hour virtual meeting of its National Executive Council (NEC).

The doctors are demanding immediate payment of the outstanding 2025 Medical Residency Training Fund, settlement of five months’ arrears from the 25 to 35 per cent Consolidated Medical Salary Structure review, as well as other salary backlogs.

They also want the payment of the 2024 accoutrement allowance arrears, prompt disbursement of specialist allowances, and restoration of the recognition of the West African postgraduate membership certificates.
