The Banjul Accord Group Accident Investigation Agency (BAGAIA) and the Interstate Aviation Committee (IAC) have signed a groundbreaking Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen cooperation in aircraft accident and incident investigations.
The agreement, the first of its kind between two Regional Accident Investigation Organizations (RAIOs), was formalized during the 42nd ICAO Assembly in Montreal, Canada.
Signed by BAGAIA Commissioner, Mr. Charles Erhueh, and IAC Chairman, Oleg Storchevoy, the MoU sets a new benchmark for international collaboration by enabling the exchange of technical expertise, data, equipment, and training opportunities.
It also provides a framework for joint research, capacity building, and harmonization of investigative practices in line with ICAO standards.
Industry experts describe the pact as a milestone in aviation oversight, linking Africa and Eurasia in a shared commitment to accident prevention and safety improvement.
By creating avenues for joint workshops, mentorship, and cross-border investigations, the agreement is expected to raise global safety standards and inspire similar partnerships among other regional bodies.
The MoU takes effect immediately and remains open-ended, with provisions for review and termination under agreed conditions.
Observers say it marks the beginning of a new era in international aviation safety cooperation.
