NDLEA Strengthens Drug Interdiction Capacity with German-Built Dog Complex

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), has inaugurated a new canine facility donated by the German government to strengthen Nigeria’s fight against illicit drugs.

Speaking at the inauguration of the modern complex in Ikeja, Lagos, chairman, NDLEA, Brig. General Buba Marwa (rtd), described the facility as a milestone in the partnership between Nigeria and Germany, praising the quality of the infrastructure and its importance to the NDLEA’s operational capacity.

In a statement by the NDLEA spokesman, Mr Femi Babafemi, he noted that sniffer dogs have been instrumental in major drug seizures, including the interception of 74.119kg of captagon at Apapa seaport in 2021 and over 17.9 metric tonnes of illicit substances in recent years.

The NDLEA boss commended Germany for its consistent technical, logistics and training support,.

He stressed that the new facility will provide a dignified environment for canine personnel and further enhance interdiction efforts at airports, seaports, borders and transport hubs.

German Consul General, Daniel Krull, who represented his government at the event, said NDLEA’s achievements under Marwa’s leadership benefit not only Nigeria but also Germany and the global community.

He emphasized the importance of trust in international cooperation and lauded the agency’s successes.

Also speaking, the German Federal Criminal Police (BKA), Mr. Florian Bulow, described the support for NDLEA as one of the longest-standing projects in police capacity building, noting that teamwork and shared values have made the collaboration successful.
