Aviation’s Future Depends on People, Not Infrastructure…Dr. Akande

The Chairman of Bellagio Airline, Dr. Oludare Akande, says, the true strength of Nigeria’s aviation industry lies in its people, not just in aircraft, infrastructure or technology.

Speaking at the mega reunion of former Virgin Nigeria staff in Lagos, Dr. Akande described the defunct carrier as the “pool and foundation” of today’s aviation workforce, noting that many of the country’s finest professionals trace their roots back to Virgin Nigeria.

“Any best talent you find in the industry today, whether engineers, cabin crew, or management, has a flavor of Virgin Nigeria. The training, professionalism and work ethic developed there still transcend generations”.

He argued that the collapse of Virgin Nigeria did not diminish its impact but instead created a lasting professional culture that continues to shape the industry.

According to him, the airline’s legacy proves that the sustainability of any carrier depends on the people who drive it.

“The success of an airline is not about engineers, avionics or cabin services alone, it is about the people. From the gate keeper to the CEO, everyone is a professional and must be treated with respect”.

He also challenged airline leaders to improve communication and foster a sense of belonging among staff, warning against the industry culture of mass staff migration whenever a new airline emerges.

Dr. Akande further encouraged the formation of alumni networks, describing them as vital for professional collaboration, mentorship and opportunities within the sector.

The soon to start airline operator noted that leading global companies thrive because of strong alumni systems that continue to create value long after the companies themselves have changed shape.

“The Virgin Nigeria story shows us that while airlines may come and go, the people, the knowledge and the networks endure. That is the greatest investment this industry can make”.
