American technology giant Google has unveiled a major initiative to boost higher education across Africa by granting university students free access to its premium AI subscription, Google AI Pro, for one year.
The offer is open to eligible students aged 18 and above in Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, Rwanda, South Africa, and Zimbabwe, giving them access to Gemini 2.5 Pro, Google’s most powerful generative AI model.

According to the company, the initiative aims to enhance students’ learning, research, and creativity, while equipping them with essential AI literacy skills to thrive in a digital-driven future.
Alex Okosi, Managing Director for Google in Sub-Saharan Africa, said the program is part of Google’s commitment to democratizing access to cutting-edge technology across the continent.
“By providing students with access to our most advanced AI tools, we want to empower them to not only excel in their studies but also to become critical builders and shapers of the future,” Okosi said.
“This offer is about giving African students the skills to compete and lead on a global stage.”
Through this initiative, Google hopes to nurture the next generation of African innovators, creators, and tech leaders, ensuring they gain firsthand experience with the AI technologies shaping the world of tomorrow.
