As the world marked World Food Day 2025, Nigerians have called on the Federal Government to increase investment in local farmers, promote sustainable agriculture, and ensure equitable food distribution to strengthen the nation’s food system.
Speaking at an event organised by Spectra Industries Ltd in Lagos, the company’s Executive Director, Mrs. Oluremi Kuteyi, said Nigeria has both the knowledge and tools to overcome its food challenges through sustainable agricultural practices that boost productivity while protecting the environment.
“Today, October 16, 2025, marks the 80th anniversary of the FAO and World Food Day, themed ‘Hand in Hand for Better Food and a Better Future.’ We must work together to achieve better food systems that nourish both people and the planet,” Kuteyi said.
Also speaking, the Senior Special Adviser to the President on Industrial Training and Development, Adamson Ayinde, noted that the event aligns with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda, stressing that achieving food security requires the collective effort of all Nigerians.
Meanwhile, the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called on Nigerians to unite against hunger and malnutrition, describing food security as a shared national responsibility.
She emphasized the importance of partnerships that promote sustainable agriculture, reduce food waste, and ensure access to nutritious and affordable meals for every household.
At a separate event in Abuja, the Nutrition Society of Nigeria (NSN), FCT chapter, urged government action to curb rising inflation and worsening malnutrition.
The NSN Chairperson, Major Edith Nwachinereme, said the group’s outreach focuses on grassroots communities where malnutrition is most severe, teaching mothers how to prepare nutritious meals from affordable, locally available foods.
“When we talk about food, it’s not just about the elite. We go to the rural areas to help mothers make the most of what they have. This is our third year doing so,” She said
