MBF Alleges Genocide in Plateau, Benue Schools Collapse

The Middle Belt Forum (MBF) has raised alarm over renewed killings in Plateau State, describing the escalating violence as a coordinated campaign of genocide against indigenous ethnic groups in the region.

In a statement by its National Spokesperson, Luka Binniyat, the Forum condemned the murder of 13 Berom natives in Rachas village, Heipang District of Barkin Ladi Local Council, Plateau State, calling it “a horrifying and systematic extermination of native communities.”

Binniyat said the attacks fit the United Nations’ definition of genocide, noting that targeted killings and displacement are aimed at erasing ancestral identities and seizing indigenous lands.

He alleged that the atrocities are a continuation of an old jihad, now executed by extremist groups of Fulani and Kanuri origin, including Boko Haram and ISWAP.

Representing indigenous peoples of the North-Central states and parts of the North-East, the MBF urged both the Nigerian government and international community to act decisively to end the killings and protect vulnerable communities.

Meanwhile, in Benue State, the Tyoshin Strategic Group (TSG) has expressed concern over the collapse of public education in Gwer-West Local Council due to incessant herdsmen attacks.

According to its leader, Dr. Felix Atume, only five government-owned primary schools remain functional, with several facilities occupied by internally displaced persons (IDPs).

Atume called for urgent intervention, proposing the relocation of IDPs, conversion of destroyed schools into mega learning centres, and creation of temporary schools for displaced pupils to avert a total educational breakdown in the area.

In a related development, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to ending banditry and insecurity nationwide.

Represented by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, during an APC event in Bida, Niger State, the President said security agencies have been directed to restore peace and ensure the safety of all Nigerians.
