Tinubu Commended for Establishing Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy

President Bola Tinubu has once again been commended for his foresight in creating the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, aimed at repositioning Nigeria’s maritime sector for growth and sustainability.

The commendation came from the Lagos Area Manager of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Mrs. Sarah Braimah, while speaking at a maritime forum held in Lagos.

Mrs. Braimah highlighted the enormous untapped potential of Nigeria’s inland waterways and urged stakeholders to contribute actively to the growth and sustainable development of the nation’s emerging blue economy.

According to her, the creation of the ministry underscores government’s renewed commitment to maritime development and calls for greater public and private sector investment in water transport infrastructure.

She noted that while inland waterways development is capital-intensive, it is vital for easing road congestion, promoting coastal trade, and driving national productivity.

“The vast potential of this sector can transform coastal livelihoods and boost national prosperity,” she said.

The NIWA Area Manager described the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy as a strategic move and a potential game changer for Nigeria’s economic diversification and maritime advancement.

Mrs. Braimah also commended the Lagos State Government for its growing investments in water transportation, citing projects such as the Lagos Ferry Services and ongoing dredging works that have improved waterways connectivity within the state.

She called for stronger collaboration among federal, state, and private actors to ensure the success of Nigeria’s blue economy initiative and to unlock its full potential for job creation and sustainable development.
