Oyetunde Urges Unity, Continuous Learning Among Lagos Journalists Ahead Elections

The Deputy National President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Dr. (Mrs.) Abimbola Oyetunde, has reaffirmed her commitment to strengthening professional capacity among journalists, pledging to support training initiatives that will equip members of the Lagos State Council with modern media skills.

Speaking at a Special Congress of the Lagos Council, Dr. Oyetunde underscored the importance of continuous learning in an evolving media landscape, noting that journalists must constantly upgrade their knowledge to remain relevant and credible.

“Training is no longer optional for us. The world is moving fast. A journalist who stops learning will be left behind,” she said.

Recounting her journey through the ranks of the NUJ—from Chapel Chairman at the FRCN Lagos Operations to Secretary of the Lagos Council, National Trustee, and now Deputy National President—Dr. Oyetunde emphasized that her passion for fairness and members’ welfare continues to guide her leadership philosophy.

As the Lagos Council prepares for its elections next year, she urged members to avoid hate campaigns, divisive rhetoric, and character attacks, stressing that the union’s strength lies in its unity.

“Elections are temporary, but our brotherhood and professional identity remain permanent. Let us disagree in ideas, but not in spirit,” she advised.

The Lagos NUJ Chairman welcomed Dr. Oyetunde’s visit, describing her as a model of integrity and commitment whose leadership journey inspires younger professionals.

He assured her of the council’s support for initiatives that promote training, welfare, and unity among members.

The event, which attracted senior media professionals and chapel leaders, ended with wide applause for Dr. Oyetunde’s remarks, which participants described as timely, motivational, and reflective of the true spirit of the union.
