Ex- ICAN Chair Urges Accountants to Embrace Digital, Ethical Innovation

Past Chairman of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), Ikeja District, Mr. Joshua Oderinde, has called on accountants to embrace digital transformation, strengthen ethical conduct, and remain innovative to stay relevant in the evolving global market.

Speaking at the 2025 International Accounting Day celebration in Lagos, Oderinde traced the history and significance of the event, noting that it offers professionals a platform to reflect on their contributions to economic development and financial integrity.

He emphasized that while technology continues to reshape business operations, accountants must blend financial expertise with digital literacy to meet future market expectations.

“The Chartered Accountant of the future is digitally skilled, ethically grounded, strategically minded, and globally relevant,” he said.

Oderinde highlighted that Artificial Intelligence (AI), data analytics, and blockchain will redefine auditing, reporting, and fraud prevention practices, while the adoption of IFRS sustainability disclosure standards will increasingly shape financial reporting.

He urged professionals to continually retrain and retool through lifelong learning, stressing that despite technological change, the accountant’s core value — trust — remains timeless, adding, “In the digital age, the conscience of commerce must not only record history but help shape the future.”
