National Assembly Backs Stronger Reforms for Safer Aviation Operations

The Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Safety Standards and Regulations, Mr. David Zacharias, has reaffirmed the National Assembly’s commitment to strengthening aviation safety and workplace welfare across the country.

He gave the assurance during the 2025 Safety Week of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), themed “Navigating Conflict for a Safer Aviation.”

Mr. Zacharias commended FAAN for promoting a culture of safety and professionalism, revealing that the National Assembly has commenced legislative work on the Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Bill aimed at enhancing safety frameworks nationwide.

He added that lawmakers have also passed a motion to create a dedicated budget line for OSH activities across all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies.

He described this year’s theme as timely, noting that conflict management and effective communication are essential tools for achieving safety excellence in aviation.

According to him, the National Assembly remains fully aligned with FAAN’s safety priorities and will continue to support measures that improve regulatory compliance and the welfare of aviation workers.

FAAN Managing Director, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, represented by Dr. Eniola Luqman, called for a unified industry response to behavioural and interpersonal conflicts that threaten operational safety.

She stressed that despite the sector’s technical strength, issues such as unruly passengers, staff disputes, and stakeholder tensions still pose risks.

Also speaking, NAMA Managing Director, Mr. Farouk Ahmed, represented by Mr. John Tayo, emphasized that collaboration among aviation stakeholders remains central to achieving safety goals.

FAAN’s General Manager of Safety Services, Mrs. Ifeoma Mba, added that safety within the Authority is not merely a rule but a core value guiding all operations.Let me know if you want a shorter version, radio script, or social-media caption.
