Akwa Ibom International Airport Poised to Transform Nigeria’s Tourism

Nigeria’s aviation landscape has taken a major leap forward with the inauguration of the Akwa Ibom International Airport in Uyo—an ultramodern facility hailed as a game-changer for the country’s tourism and economic development.

Recently granted international status by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, the airport stands beside the existing domestic terminal and features state-of-the-art travel technology, premium lounges, recreational areas, and contemporary shopping arcades.

It also makes history as the first airport of its calibre in the South-South region.

Mr. Nkereweum Onung, President of Experience IBOM and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the National Association of Nigeria Tour Operators (NATOP), described the project as a transformative milestone that will elevate Nigeria’s cultural tourism profile.

He applauded Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, for his visionary leadership in positioning the state as a premier tourism destination.

Onung, the immediate past President of the Federation of Tourism Associations of Nigeria (FTAN), noted that the new airport will attract global travellers, expand cultural tourism offerings, create job opportunities, and stimulate socio-economic growth across the South-South.

“Pastor Umo Eno has proven to be a professional, cultural tourism ambassador, and strategic reformer. His infrastructure drive will enhance tourism, hospitality, economic development, and security in the state. At Experience IBOM, we look forward to partnering with the airport management to ensure maximum utilization and preservation of these facilities,” he said.

He further revealed that Experience IBOM is set to launch robust marketing campaigns with international partners to spotlight Akwa Ibom—and Nigeria as a whole—on the global tourism map.

According to him, top-tier infrastructure such as the Akwa Ibom International Airport is vital for opening large nations like Nigeria to increased travel, commerce, and community development.

Onung also commended Minister Keyamo for elevating Nigeria’s standing in global aviation
