AMJON Celebrates Nigeria’s Historic Return to IMO Council Seat

The Association of Maritime Journalists of Nigeria (AMJON) has hailed Nigeria’s re-election into the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council under Category C for the 2026–2027 biennium, marking the nation’s first successful comeback in 14 years.

The group described the development as a major milestone that restores Nigeria’s influence in global maritime governance.

In a statement signed by Acting President Vera Osokpo and Public Relations Officer Uzor Odigbo, AMJON attributed the achievement to the leadership of the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola.

It noted that his sustained diplomatic engagement and clear articulation of Nigeria’s maritime reform agenda played a decisive role during the competitive election process.

The Association also commended the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) for providing the technical backbone that strengthened the campaign.

It highlighted the agency’s progress in maritime safety administration, regulatory compliance, manpower development, and enhanced security operations, particularly in the Gulf of Guinea.

According to AMJON, Nigeria’s successful bid reflects the country’s improved maritime security profile and its increasing alignment with global standards.

The renewed Council membership, it said, positions Nigeria to play a more prominent role in shaping international shipping policies while amplifying Africa’s voice in maritime affairs.

AMJON urged the Ministry and NIMASA to maximize the opportunities offered by the Council seat by consolidating ongoing reforms, deepening regional partnerships, and attracting more investment into the maritime sector.

The group reaffirmed its commitment to supporting initiatives that promote sustainable growth within Nigeria’s maritime industry.
