The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, has urged Corps Members nationwide to immerse themselves in the cultural values of their host communities and use the service year to strengthen national unity.
He made the call during his visit to the 2025 Batch ‘C’ Corps Members at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp in Wamakko, Sokoto State.
Addressing the Corps Members, Brigadier General Nafiu said cultural appreciation remains vital to promoting national cohesion.
He encouraged them to view the service year as a unique opportunity to interact with people from diverse backgrounds, learn new traditions, and build lasting relationships that could shape their future.
The DG further advised the Corps Members to take interest in Nigeria’s natural resources and regional economic strengths, noting that each geopolitical zone offers distinct opportunities in agriculture, solid minerals, tourism, and local crafts.
According to him, understanding these advantages can inspire innovative business ideas and create pathways for inter-regional trade.
“Learning what each region produces naturally opens doors for collaboration and entrepreneurship,” he said, adding that such knowledge can help young Nigerians build strong business networks beyond the orientation camp.
Brigadier General Nafiu also encouraged the Corps Members to cultivate friendships across ethnic and religious lines, stressing that such bonds are essential for a peaceful and united nation.
He noted that many thriving professional networks in Nigeria today began with relationships formed during NYSC service years.
He cautioned them against using social media irresponsibly, particularly for spreading misinformation or divisive content.
Instead, he urged them to rely on verified sources and use digital platforms to promote unity and national development.
The DG reaffirmed that the NYSC scheme was created to foster unity, service, and nation-building, reminding Corps Members of their duty to uphold these core values throughout their service year.
Brigadier General Nafiu was accompanied by senior NYSC officials and camp coordinators, who also interacted with the Corps Members and assessed ongoing camp activities.
